DESCRIPTION: |
The Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) is the only globally recognized internal audit certification and a registered designation in South Africa. Not only does the CIA demonstrate your credibility as an internal audit professional, it also gives you a competitive edge over your peers. IIA South Africa historically has regarded the CIA as a crucial element of the value proposition to IIA members in South Africa, and this holds true today. To earn the CIA designation, candidates must meet eligibility requirements in the following four areas;
Academic qualification
Ethics
Examinations
Experience
To use this designation in South Africa a designation holder must be a member of the IIA SA in good standing. |
AWARDING CRITERIA |
For the Professional Designation to be awarded, professionals must comply with the following minimum requirements: |
Underlying Registered Qualification or Part Qualification: |
Must have completed the Certificate: General Internal Auditing (NQF Level 8) SAQA ID 20359. |
Experiential Learning or Experience |
Must have a minimum of 3 years internal auditing experience if the Certificate: General Internal Auditing is completed by registering for the full qualification which includes a compulsory experiential component. |
Competency Assessment |
Since the IIA South Africa is responsible for the final assessment of the qualification, the decision was made to utilise the final assessment of the qualification as part of the procedure for conferring the designation. The CIA is a three part-stakes examination consisting of the following examinations:
Part 1 - Internal Audit Basics
Part 2 - Internal Audit Practice
Part 3 - Internal Audit Knowledge Elements
Items included in the exam have been pre-tested to ensure topics are tested at either the awareness or proficiency level. |

RETAINING CRITERIA |
In order to ensure the currency of professional knowledge and to retain the Professional Designation, the professional must comply with the following minimum requirements: |
Code of Conduct |
Members must adhere to the Professional Body Codes of Conduct and Ethics. |
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) |
A practising Professional Internal Auditor must complete 40 CPD hours A non-practising Professional Internal Auditor must complete 20 hours It is the CIA's responsibility to ensure that the CPD hours are recorded. Certified individuals that fail to obtain the required CPD hours will have their designation status moved to inactive status and will not be allowed to use the designation. |
