DESCRIPTION: |
A Certified Roof Erector (Cert. RE) is a practicing professional who will traditionally come from the trades' profession as qualified carpenters. The erection and bracing of timber roof trusses is a specialised field and require special training, firstly to understand the concept of rational design and then to apply the design in accordance with industry prescriptions. The roof erection function is to encompass all types of structural members supplied by the Truss Fabricator and includes not only trusses, but any beams, all necessary bracing, rafters or joists and their connections including hangers, brackets and cleats. Most roof failure can be attributed to erection problems. The Initial Test of Competence (ITC) creates a regulated environment where the training and competence of Roof Erectors is confirmed, protecting the consumer.

For the Professional Designation to be awarded, professionals must comply with the following minimum requirements:
Academic Component: Persons recognised for the designation of Certified Roof Erector must have passed the relevant Carpenter Trade Test as specified in the Manpower Training Act; Section 28 or 13 and/or have obtained a carpentry qualification in terms of the Skills Development Act. Provision is also made for previously disadvantaged individuals that have not had the benefit of completing a formal Learnership program. In this case, and where no formal qualification exists, recognition by the process of RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) will be applied for on the job training and experience to enable candidate to qualify. |
Experiential Learning or Experience |
All persons applying for this category of registration would be required to have completed the ITC-SA's Roof Erector requirements for registration within 12 months of applying for registration as a Certified Roof Erector. During the 12 months prior to registration, the Roof Erector will work under an identified mentor, and will be referred to as a Probationary Roof Erector.
Registered Roof Erectors will need further education and training to move from a Category C/D (non-complex roof structures) Roof Erector to a Category A (complex roof structures) Roof Erector. Certified Roof Erectors will not be allowed to erect roofs outside the category for which they have been registered. |
Competency Assessment |
Probationary Roof Erectors will need to obtain a logbook from the ITC-SA and pay his fees and after 5 normal roof inspections by an ITC-SA Roof Inspector and certification by an ITC-SA Accredited Engineer, may then apply for an audit inspection.
The ITC-SA nominated Audit Inspector shall visit the site/s, and shall prepare a report on the ITC-SA provided format to confirm the competency of the Probationary Roof Erector. |

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) |
In order to ensure the currency of professional knowledge and to retain the Professional Designation, the professional must comply with the following minimum requirements:
Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Members are required to provide proof to ITC-SA of their CPD activities. Members are required to accumulate 4 CPD points annually by completing a range of accredited activities such as: The ITC-SA decides on the points each activity is worth. The ITC-SA Technical Engineering Advisory Committee ensures that CPD activities and certification requirements are co-ordinated. |
