DESCRIPTION:
A Professional Construction Mentor (Pr CMentor) is an SACPCMP registered built environment professional who provides construction mentorship services to contractor's registered in all the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) grades. This is by way of the evaluation and assessment of a contractor's skills, identification of contractor's shortcomings and provision of suitable relevant advice to the contractor to address these shortcomings and thereby to achieve their potential.

Some of the Professional Construction Mentorship services that amongst others the Pr CMentor renders/provides are:
  • Determination of the level of skills that the contractor has.
  • Completion of a skills audit questionnaire with the contractor.
  • Review and recommend potential and cost effective alternative construction methods which comply with the project specification.
  • Review tender documentation with the contractor to establish any cost effective alternative solutions.
  • Provides advice on cost control systems as may be required by the contractor for estimating, budgeting and cost reporting purposes.
  • Provide advice and contact particulars of relevant training courses provided that are appropriate for the contractor's level of expertise.
  • Manage the contractor's ability to effectively manage the process for procurement of sub-contractors and suppliers in accordance with agreed procedures including evaluation of tenders, award of sub-contracts and supplier agreements.
  • Analyse project risks and finalise tender submissions.
  • Calculate and determine project cash flow requirements.
  • Facilitate the contractors compliance with statutory requirements.
  • Advise the contractor on how to continuously manage the review of construction documentation and information for clarity of construction requirements.
  • Advise the contractor on how to upgrade their CIDB grading. 
  • AWARDING CRITERIA
    For the Professional Designation to be awarded, professionals must comply with the following minimum requirements: 
    Underlying Registered Qualification or Part Qualification:
    Be registered in terms of any Built Environment Professions Act or demonstrate an equivalent level of expertise. 
    Experiential Learning or Experience
    Must have ten (10) years' experience in the construction industry at a senior management level. 
    Competency Assessment
  • Must have been assessed by the SACPCMP as able to act as a Professional Construction Mentor following a psychometric examination.
  • Must pass a professional interview that is conducted by the SACPCMP. 
  • Designation RPL Statement
    This Designation may be awarded through Recognition of Prior Learning. 
    RETAINING CRITERIA
    In order to ensure the currency of professional knowledge and to retain the Professional Designation, the professional must comply with the following minimum requirements: 
    Code of Conduct
    Members must adhere to the Professional Body Codes of Conduct and Ethics. 
    Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
    In order to enhance professional development and ensure the currency of professional knowledge and skills, the South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions has determined Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as a means to retain professional registration. This is in line with sections 13(k) and 22(2) of the Project and Construction Management Professions Act, Act no 48 of 2000.

    All registered professionals are required to undertake CPD activities according to the CPD Policy framework as gazetted in Board Notice 75 of 2012.

    As from 1 April 2012, professional registration is valid for 5 years only and registered professionals are expected to accumulate a minimum of 52 points over this period. Registration is renewed on successful compliance with the requirement, subject to the registered professional being in good standing with Council. The below illustrates a summary of the principle.

    Category A:
    Core knowledge:
  • 60 percent.
    Non-core knowledge:
  • 60 percent.

    Mentorship and Development:
  • 20 percent.
    Category C:
    Ongoing practice:
  • 20 percent.

    A clear guideline of the award of points is provided in the guideline document. Registered professionals are encouraged to submit annual returns of activities undertaken. The CPD committee together with Council Administrative staff are responsible for ensuring compliance to the policy.

    Ensure that the annual membership fee is paid.
