DESCRIPTION: |
Professional Certificated Engineers are persons who are registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), as such in terms of section 19(2) of the Engineering Profession Act, 2000 (Act No 46 of 2000). They hold an appointment, which requires the possession of a Government Certificate of competency as a Manager or as an Engineer in terms of the Mines Health and Safety Act, 1996 (Act No 29 of 1996), or as an Engineer in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 (Act No 85 of 1993) or as a Chief Engineer Officer - Foreign Going on a vessel with a registered power of no less than 3 000 kW in terms of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1951 (Act No 57 of 1951), or in terms of any Act preceded or superseded any of the Acts mentioned above, and which demonstrates the applicant's competence to implement and manage the provisions of these Acts, and ensure the safe operation and maintenance of plant and equipment. |
AWARDING CRITERIA |
For the Professional Designation to be awarded, professionals must comply with the following minimum requirements: |
Underlying Registered Qualification or Part Qualification: |
The attainment of one of the following Certificates of Competency (which should not be of limited scope):
Electrical Engineer's Certificate of Competency issued i.t.o. the Mines Health and Safety Act (MH andS Act).
Mechanical Engineer's Certificate of Competency issued i.t.o. the MH and S Act.
Electrical Engineer's Certificate of Competency issued i.t.o. the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OH and S Act).
Mechanical Engineer's Certificate of Competency issued i.t.o. the OH and S Act.
Manager's Certificate of Competency (Metalliferous) issued i.t.o. the MH and S Act.
Manager's Certificate of Competency (Coal) issued i.t.o.MH and S Act.
Chief Engineer Officer - Foreign Going Certificate of Competency issued i.t.o the Merchant Shipping Act (MS Act). |
Experiential Learning or Experience |
A minimum of three years post-graduate experience of an appropriate nature, which must include at least one year holding a formal legal appointment as the responsible engineer in terms of the appropriate Act. |
Competency Assessment |
A formal written application in the prescribed format, followed by a full experience appraisal assessment by an ECSA committee of peers in the certificated engineer category and a final assessment by the registration committee for professional certificated engineers. |
Designation RPL Statement |
This Designation may not be awarded through Recognition of Prior Learning. |
RETAINING CRITERIA |
In order to ensure the currency of professional knowledge and to retain the Professional Designation, the professional must comply with the following minimum requirements: |
Code of Conduct |
Members must adhere to the Professional Body Codes of Conduct and Ethics. |
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) |
All professionally registered engineering practitioners have to obtain at least five CPD credits in at least two of the three categories of CPD activities prescribed by ECSA. (Developmental activities, Work-based activities and Individual activities) per year and twenty-five credits over a five year cycle. |

Ensure that the annual membership fee is paid. |
