DESCRIPTION: |
Professional Engineers apply a significant range of fundamental principles, enabling the development and application of new technologies, the promotion of advanced designs and design methods, the introduction of new and innovative production techniques and construction concepts; they pioneer new engineering services and management methods.
They do advanced design, research and field engineering:
The management of the high level risks associated with engineering processes, systems, equipment, and infrastructure.
Activities that are essentially intellectual in nature, requiring discretion and judgement.
Execute engineering work applying known and novel technology in a specific discipline, or a combination of disciplines of engineering, in an innovative manner, drawing on a broad base of expertise. They perform a variety of functions, including but not limited to, design from first principles, draughting, constructing, installation, calibration, commissioning, servicing, repair, maintenance, operating, monitoring, manufacturing, economics and management of resources. They understand fundamental principles underlying techniques and are competent to do calculations using mathematical formulas. |
AWARDING CRITERIA |

Underlying Registered Qualification or Part Qualification: |
An accredited four year BSc(Eng)/BEng/BIng Degree (NQF Level 8). |
Experiential Learning or Experience |
A minimum of three years post-graduate experience of a complex engineering nature, which entails exposure to the full life cycle of an engineering project: conceptualisation, planning, design, construction, implementation, operation, maintenance and closure. |
Competency Assessment |
A formal written application in the prescribed format, followed by a full experience appraisal assessment by an ECSA committee of peers in the same discipline of engineering as the applicant (There are nine accepted disciplines of engineering), followed by a professional review with a panel of two professional assessors and a final assessment of the professional advisory committee for the discipline of engineering concerned on the registerability of the candidate, after receiving the professional review report. |
