DESCRIPTION:
An Accredited Timber Engineer (ACC. TE) is a practicing professional who will traditionally come from the built environment, must have prior experience in roof design and construction, and must already be registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa as a professional engineer or professional engineering technologist.

The applicant will also be required to provide proof of Professional Indemnity Insurance recognising cover for structural design in timber roof structures.

Lastly, the applicant shall provide a comprehensive Curriculum Vitae (CV) of work done (portfolio of evidence) confirming under whose mentorship he/she received training to confirm competence in timber structure design and construction. The application shall be tendered at the ITC-SA Technical Engineering Advisory Committee for vetting and approval by his/her peers in the industry.

On approval of the Accredited Timber Engineer, the applicant will receive his/her Registration Certificate. Before confirmation of the set requirements, the applicant Timber Engineer will be referred to as a Probationary Timber Engineer. 
AWARDING CRITERIA
For the Professional Designation to be awarded, professionals must comply with the following minimum requirements:

Academic Component:
  • Persons recognised for the designation of Certified Roof Inspector must have prior experience in roof design and construction, and should preferably have a recognised qualification (NQF Level 6) in the built environment. This qualification must be in the field of civil engineering. 
  • Experiential Learning or Experience
    In all cases, a minimum experience of 3 years in the construction industry will be required. In the absence of any prior exposure to the design and construction of timber roof structures, the applicant Engineer will need to complete the Systems software modules and have passed the exams. 
    Competency Assessment
    Probationary Timber Engineers will go through a peer review at ITC-SA Technical Engineering Advisory Committee to demonstrate competence in timber design. 
    Designation RPL Statement
    This Designation may not be awarded through Recognition of Prior Learning. 
    RETAINING CRITERIA
    In order to ensure the currency of professional knowledge and to retain the Professional Designation, the professional must comply with the following minimum requirements: 
    Code of Conduct
    Members must adhere to the Professional Body Codes of Conduct and Ethics. 
    Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
    In order to ensure the currency of professional knowledge and to retain the Professional Designation, the professional must comply with the following minimum requirements:

    Continuing Professional Development (CPD):
    Members are required to provide proof to ITC-SA of their CPD activities.

    Members are required to accumulate 4 CPD points annually by completing a range of accredited activities such as:
  • Attendance at workshops, seminars and information sessions.
  • Giving presentations to inside and outside groups.
  • Running workshops.
  • Writing articles for in-house and general publications.

    The ITC-SA decides on the points each activity is worth.

    The ITC-SA Technical Engineering Advisory Committee ensures that CPD activities and certification requirements are co-ordinated. 
  • Fees
    Ensure that the annual membership fee is paid.
