DESCRIPTION:
Graduate Member (GradSaiosh) is the second level of professional designations and provides an opportunity for persons with higher qualifications and practical experience to practice in the field of Occupational Health and Safety. The employment title for this level is Occupational Health and Safety Professional (OHSProf).
  • The candidate will be being able to implement and monitor an OHS programme with the need for expert Health and Safety strategy, forecasting, budgeting or complex occupational health and safety plans.
  • This person is expected to produce reports, advanced accident trending with advanced statistical interpretation, he/she is expected to provide guidance on prevention of accidents and incidents by using at least descriptive statistics.
  • The incumbent will be able to demonstrate the inter-relationship between occupational hygiene, occupational health, fire safety, occupational medicine, safety practice and general organizational management practice.
  • To improve health and safety in the workplace, by applying and health and safety theory and legislation in various contexts, with expert integration.
  • The GradSaiosh will be able to do integrated health and safety audits.
  • Implementing strategic health and safety systems and programs, identifying hazards and suggesting controls in or to mitigate those hazards, together with the necessary multi-disciplinary team.
  • He /she would be able to do advance quantitative and qualitative risk assessments of those hazards identified.
  • Providing advice within his scope of knowledge and not working outside of those boundaries as specified in the Code of Conduct.
  • Manage health and safety training.
  • Co-ordinate OHS management systems and programs.
  • Conduct OHS research.
  • Negotiate and manage conflict.
  • Co-ordinate occupational health, safety and risk management integration.
  • Providing advice within his/her scope of knowledge and not working outside of those boundaries as specified in the Code of Conduct. 
  • AWARDING CRITERIA
    For the Professional Designation to be awarded, professionals must comply with the following minimum requirements: 
    Underlying Registered Qualification or Part Qualification:
    NQF Level 6 (360 credits) qualification in Health or Safety.

    Recognition of prior learning (RPL) includes the following:

    Grade 12 (Matric) + courses listed for TechSaiosh + the following courses:
  • SAMTRAC or equivalent (minimum U/S 244283)
  • OHSAS 18000 training (U/S 116785)
  • Advanced RA Training (U/S 244287, 244508)
  • Advanced Incident Investigation training (U/S 244518)
  • Advanced Legal Training (U/S 244514)
  • Management Training (U/S 15231 or similar)
  • Two extra years of experience 
  • Experiential Learning or Experience
    3 years post graduate workplace experience required.

    Recognition of prior learning (RPL) - additional 3 years experience. 
    Competency Assessment
    Academic / experience verification and portfolio of evidence assessment. 
    Designation RPL Statement
    This Designation may be awarded through Recognition of Prior Learning. 
    RETAINING CRITERIA
    In order to ensure the currency of professional knowledge and to retain the Professional Designation, the professional must comply with the following minimum requirements: 
    Code of Conduct
    Members must adhere to the Professional Body Codes of Conduct and Ethics. 
    Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
    Members are required to complete CPD and must accumulate an amount of CPD points per annum as stipulated in the CPD policy by completing a range of OHS activities such as:
  • Attendance at Health and Safety workshops, seminars and information sessions.
  • Attending Health and Safety meetings.
  • Conducting and management of Health and Safety training.
  • Giving presentations to inside and outside groups, (proof may be requested).
  • Strategic planning, constructability plans, construction plans, man-power forecasting, budgeting (Proof to be supplied).
  • Publishing research articles for in-house and general publications.
  • Further studies; e.g. NQF Level 7.
  • Professional Health and Safety Practice - General. 
  • Fees
    Ensure that the annual membership fee is paid.
